The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has addressed recent speculation surrounding fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi’s possible appointment as Pakistan’s new ODI captain in place of wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan.

The board confirmed that no conclusive decision has been reached regarding the leadership role for the upcoming home series against South Africa.A PCB representative revealed that head coach Mike Hesson has formally written to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, suggesting a joint session between the Selection Committee and the Advisory Committee to settle the captaincy matter.

As per the PCB, Chairman Naqvi has forwarded this proposal to both committees, which are scheduled to meet on October 20 to make the final determination on who will lead the side in the 50-over format.

This clarification follows mounting media reports indicating that Shaheen Shah Afridi is under consideration to replace Mohammad Rizwan as Pakistan’s ODI skipper after a series of underwhelming performances.Pakistan’s form in one-day internationals has been disappointing in recent months.

The team failed to advance beyond the opening stage of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and later suffered a 3-0 series defeat against New Zealand, followed by a 2-1 loss to the West Indies.
