Newly reappointed Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has opened up about his batting philosophy, asserting that his approach on the crease is purely dictated by the match situation and the requirements of his team.
Speaking on a PCB digital program, Babar countered long-standing critiques regarding his scoring rate. “My mindset while batting is always aligned with what the team needs. If the situation demands quick scoring, I switch gears and play aggressively. If it requires digging in and defending, I adapt accordingly,” Babar clarified, adding that he welcomes constructive criticism and actively tries to implement useful feedback.
Reflecting on his return to the helm of the Test side for the upcoming tours of the West Indies and England, Babar described leading Pakistan as a perpetual honor. He admitted that past stints provided steep learning curves. “Leadership maturity and clarity only come with time. I have thoroughly evaluated my past decisions, and this time, I am leading with sharper planning and an entirely positive mindset,” he stated.
A major focus for Babar in his third captaincy tenure is shielding the squad’s younger players from the intense crucible of international cricket. He noted that his primary role off the field is to communicate with the youngsters and alleviate pressure during tough phases. However, the skipper issued a stern warning regarding squad standards: “There will be absolute zero tolerance when it comes to discipline, fitness, and performance.”
Babar credited the recent National Cricket Academy (NCA) red-ball camp for physically hardening the squad ahead of two grueling away tours. While acknowledging that the Caribbean tour will pose a unique challenge, he expressed confidence in the team’s preparation. Furthermore, he highlighted that several squad members possess extensive English County Cricket experience, which will serve as a massive tactical advantage when they land in England. Recognizing the high expectations of the fans, Babar concluded by stressing that overnight turnarounds are impossible, but maintaining a strict routine will ultimately yield the desired results.
