Legendary fast bowler and former captain Wasim Akram has delivered a blunt reality check on the state of Pakistan cricket, stating that the nation must confront the hard truth after years of stagnation. Speaking to the media in Lahore, the “Sultan of Swing” expressed deep concern over the national team’s ongoing decline, noting that warning bells rang long ago after disappointing results against Bangladesh both home and away.
Akram argued that changing head coaches—whether it is Gary Kirsten or anyone else—cannot fix foundational talent deficits. Reflecting on a decade of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), he pointed out that while the tournament has produced fast bowlers, it has failed to develop top-tier batting talent comparable to prodigies emerging in neighboring India. He urged authorities to restore grassroots club cricket, advising the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to invest heavily in hubs like Karachi and Lahore and give domestic structural reforms at least three to four years of stability.
Turning his focus to technical flaws, Akram criticized the red-ball batters for staying stuck in their crease against seamers like Ollie Robinson rather than utilizing proper front-foot movement. Regarding the pace attack, he cautioned against overhyping young bowlers based on isolated 150 kph deliveries, emphasizing that true elite fast bowling requires sustaining 140 kph throughout an entire day. He concluded by questioning the selection balance for the England tour, arguing that the squad lacked speed variety and suggesting that bowler Akif Javed should have been considered following strong performances in English conditions.
