Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli produced an unforgettable masterclass in the first One Day International against the West Indies, orchestrating an unbeaten 139 that etched his name into numerous cricket record books in a single outing.
The sensational innings marked Kohli’s 55th ODI century and drew him level with batting icon Sunil Gavaskar for the most international hundreds scored against the West Indies, matching Gavaskar’s tally of 13 centuries.
Alongside matching Gavaskar, Kohli also overhauled two significant benchmarks previously held by Sachin Tendulkar. In addition to becoming the fastest batter in cricket history to reach 15,000 ODI runs, Kohli surpassed Tendulkar’s aggregate for the most ODI runs on home soil. Tendulkar had accumulated 6,976 runs in India, while Kohli’s match-winning knock elevated his home tally to 7,006 runs. Furthermore, with his 59th List A century, Kohli equaled Tendulkar’s career List A century haul and now sits just one three-figure score away from breaking Tendulkar’s record for the most international hundreds struck at home.
Adding to the remarkable list of milestones, Kohli established a unique world record at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram by tallying an aggregate of 338 ODI runs at the venue without ever being dismissed—the most runs accumulated by any batter at a single ground without losing their wicket.
Powered by his masterclass, India cruised to an authoritative eight-wicket victory over the West Indies to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
